Understanding Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a serious mental health condition characterized by extreme shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels. People with bipolar disorder experience periods of intense euphoria or elevated mood (manic or hypomanic episodes) alternating with periods of deep depression. These mood swings can be dramatic and disruptive, affecting relationships, work performance, and overall quality of life.
Bipolar disorder affects approximately 2.8% of the U.S. population and typically emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood. The condition is not simply mood swings—it involves significant neurochemical imbalances that require professional treatment. With proper diagnosis and comprehensive care, people with bipolar disorder can achieve mood stability and lead fulfilling lives.
At Blue Ocean Mental Health in Los Angeles, we specialize in bipolar disorder management through careful psychiatric evaluation, mood-stabilizing medications, and supportive therapy to help you maintain emotional balance and stability.
Types of Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar I Disorder
Characterized by at least one manic episode lasting at least 7 days (or any duration if hospitalization is required). Manic episodes involve decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, impulsive behaviors, and sometimes psychotic features. Depressive episodes typically last at least 2 weeks.
Bipolar II Disorder
Involves hypomanic episodes (less severe than full mania) alternating with depressive episodes. Hypomanic episodes last at least 4 consecutive days and involve elevated mood, increased energy, and goal-directed activity without the severe impairment of full mania.
Cyclothymia
A milder form involving chronic mood instability with hypomanic and depressive symptoms that don’t meet full criteria for bipolar I or II. Symptoms persist for at least 2 years in adults.
