GeneSight® – Genetic Testing for Medication Optimization in Los Angeles CA
GeneSight® genetic testing, guided by Esder Shin, PMHNP-BC, is a simple, non-invasive option that looks at how your genes may influence the way your body processes certain prescription medications. It may be considered for adults managing depression, anxiety, ADHD, and mood-related concerns, especially when finding the right medication fit has been challenging. Your results are reviewed with you during a private appointment to support a more personalized and confident next step in your care plan. For more information, contact us or schedule an appointment online. We are conveniently located at 11850 Wilshire Blvd, Suite 200A, Los Angeles, CA 90025.

Blue Ocean Mental Health is a California-based telepsychiatry practice providing adult psychiatric care statewide. GeneSight® testing may be used as part of a medication optimization approach for select patients with depression, anxiety, ADHD, and mood-related conditions.
GeneSight® Psychotropic is a pharmacogenomic (PGx) test that evaluates how your genes may influence the way your body metabolizes and responds to certain psychiatric medications. The test does not diagnose conditions or determine the “right” medication, but it can provide additional information to support clinical decision-making.
• Two or more medication trials with limited benefit
• Significant side effects at standard or low doses
• Partial response to treatment with ongoing symptoms
• Sensitivity to psychiatric medications
• Complex medication regimens (polypharmacy)
At Blue Ocean Mental Health, GeneSight® testing is used selectively and thoughtfully. Results are reviewed alongside your full medication history, symptom profile, and clinical goals. Genetic testing is considered one tool among many and is not used in isolation when making treatment decisions.
GeneSight® is covered by many commercial insurance plans in California, though coverage varies by individual policy and medical necessity. Most commercially insured patients pay between $0–$330 out of pocket. Financial assistance programs may be available through the laboratory.
1. Clinical consultation to determine whether testing is appropriate
2. Simple cheek swab (no blood draw required)
3. Results typically available within 1–2 weeks
4. Results reviewed during a follow-up visit and integrated into your treatment plan
Not all patients require genetic testing. Many individuals respond well to first-line treatments without GeneSight®. Your provider will discuss whether testing may be helpful based on your treatment history and clinical presentation.
